An ultrasonic level meter is a device that uses ultrasonic waves to measure the level of liquids or solids in a container or tank.

Working Principle

The ultrasonic level meter consists of a transducer that emits ultrasonic pulses and a receiver that detects the echoes reflected from the surface of the material being measured. The transducer converts electrical energy into ultrasonic energy and sends out short bursts of high-frequency sound waves (usually in the range of 20 kHz to 200 kHz). These sound waves travel through the air or other medium above the liquid or solid surface and are reflected back when they hit the surface.
The time it takes for the ultrasonic pulse to travel from the transducer to the surface and back is measured accurately. Based on the known speed of sound in the medium, the distance between the transducer and the material surface can be calculated using the formula , where is the distance, is the speed of sound, and is the time of flight. The level of the material is then determined by subtracting this distance from the known height of the transducer above the bottom of the container.

Non-contact Measurement: One of the significant advantages of ultrasonic level meters is that they do not require physical contact with the measured medium. This makes them suitable for a wide range of applications, including those involving corrosive, toxic, or viscous substances, as there is no risk of contamination or damage to the sensor due to contact with the medium.
High Accuracy: Modern ultrasonic level meters can provide relatively high measurement accuracy, typically within a few millimeters or a percentage of the measured range. The accuracy can be affected by factors such as the quality of the transducer, the characteristics of the medium, and the installation conditions, but with proper calibration and installation, accurate and reliable level measurements can be achieved.
Wide Measurement Range: They can measure level distances ranging from a few centimeters to several tens of meters, depending on the specific model and transducer used. This makes them applicable to various container sizes and storage tank configurations, from small laboratory vessels to large industrial storage tanks.
Easy Installation: Ultrasonic level meters are generally easy to install. They can be mounted on the top or side of a tank or container, and often require only a simple bracket or flange for attachment. There is no need for complex piping or penetration of the tank wall, which reduces installation time and cost compared to some other level measurement methods.
Low Maintenance: Since there are no moving parts in contact with the medium, ultrasonic level meters have relatively low maintenance requirements. They do not suffer from wear and tear due to mechanical friction, and as long as the transducer remains clean and undamaged, they can provide reliable operation over an extended period with minimal maintenance needs.

Chemical Industry: In chemical plants, ultrasonic level meters are used to measure the levels of various chemicals in storage tanks, reactors, and process vessels. They can handle corrosive and hazardous substances safely, providing accurate level information for process control, inventory management, and safety monitoring. For example, in the production of sulfuric acid, the level of the acid in the storage tank can be continuously monitored using an ultrasonic level meter to ensure proper supply to the downstream processes and prevent overfilling.
Food and Beverage Industry: In this industry, hygiene is of utmost importance. Ultrasonic level meters are ideal for measuring the levels of liquids such as water, milk, juices, and oils in tanks and processing equipment. Their non-contact measurement method ensures that there is no contamination of the food products, and they can be easily integrated into automated production lines for accurate level control during filling, mixing, and storage processes.
