Ultrasonic Flow Meters

20+ Years Manufacturing Experience

Are there any industry standards for ultrasonic flow meter calibration?

Yes, there are several industry standards for ultrasonic flow meter calibration, which are crucial for ensuring measurement accuracy and reliability. Here are the main ones:

International Standards
ISO 24192:2020: It specifies the procedures and requirements for the calibration and verification of ultrasonic flow meters. It covers calibration, verification, and uncertainty assessment methods for various types of ultrasonic flow meters, including single – beam, multi – beam, and multi – path flow meters. The standard defines terms and definitions, calibration procedures, verification procedures, and uncertainty estimation.
ISO 15155:2017: It stipulates the measurement methods for the ultrasonic characteristics of ultrasonic flow meters, including acoustic beam characteristics, penetration characteristics, and echo characteristics. The standard covers the measurement of ultrasonic characteristics such as acoustic beam width, acoustic beam divergence angle, ultrasonic signal – to – noise ratio, sound velocity, and attenuation coefficient.
ISO 15742: It pertains to the measurement of fluid flow – ultrasonic flow meters using the transit – time method for velocity measurement.
IEC 61881: It is about the ultrasonic flow measurement system.

National Standards
GB/T 18653 in China is the national standard for ultrasonic flow meters.
JJG 1030 is the verification regulation for ultrasonic flow meters in China. It provides detailed technical requirements, verification methods, and procedures for the verification of ultrasonic flow meters.

Industry – Specific Standards
SY/T 6143 in the petroleum and natural gas industry: It is about the selection and installation of ultrasonic flow meters, which provides guidance on the calibration of ultrasonic flow meters used in this industry. In the oil and gas industry, the American Gas Association Report No. 9 (AGA – 9) requires flow calibration for all meters used for custody transfer.
In the field of water supply and drainage, there are also relevant industry standards guiding the calibration of ultrasonic flow meters, such as the online calibration specification for ultrasonic flow meters, which is applicable to the online calibration of ultrasonic flow meters for measuring the flow of closed full – pipe liquids within the flow velocity range of (0.3 – 10) m/s.

In addition, some other standards, such as ISO 17025, specify the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, which also have a certain impact on the calibration of ultrasonic flow meters
