Coriolis Mass Flow Meter Introduction

1. Definition

A Coriolis mass flow meter is a direct mass flow measurement instrument based on the Coriolis effect principle. Unlike volumetric flow meters that calculate mass flow indirectly through volume and density, it directly measures the mass flow rate of fluids (liquids, gases, slurries) with high precision. It is widely used in industries requiring strict flow control, as it eliminates measurement errors caused by changes in fluid temperature, pressure, viscosity, and density.

2. Working Principle

The meter consists of one or two vibrating measurement tubes. When the fluid flows through the tubes, the built-in drive coil excites the tubes to vibrate at their natural frequency. Due to the Coriolis effect, the flowing fluid generates a reverse force on the vibrating tubes, causing phase difference and twisting deformation of the tubes at the inlet and outlet ends. The degree of deformation and phase difference is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid. The two sets of detection coils at both ends of the tubes convert the mechanical deformation into electrical signals. After processing by the intelligent converter, the signals are translated into accurate mass flow data, and cumulative flow, density, and temperature values can also be derived simultaneously.

  • Insensitive to Fluid Properties: The measurement result is not affected by changes in fluid viscosity, density, temperature, and pressure. It can stably measure Newtonian fluids, non-Newtonian fluids, and media containing bubbles or solid particles, solving the measurement dilemma of complex fluids.
  • Multi-Parameter Integration: While measuring mass flow, it can simultaneously output key parameters such as fluid density, temperature, and volume flow. This eliminates the need for additional auxiliary instruments (such as density meters and thermometers), reducing customer procurement and installation costs.
  • Wide Medium Adaptability: Suitable for various media, including high-viscosity liquids (such as lubricating oil, asphalt), corrosive fluids (such as acid-base solutions, chemical reagents), high-pressure gases, and even slurries with high solid content (such as ore pulp, sludge). It supports both single-phase and multi-phase flow measurement.
  • Stable Structure & Low Maintenance: The measurement tubes are made of high-strength corrosion-resistant materials, with no moving parts inside the meter body. It avoids wear, clogging, and fouling problems of traditional flow meters. Under normal working conditions, it can operate stably for a long time without regular disassembly and maintenance.

4. Suitable Fluids & Application Scenarios

  • Liquids: Chemical solvents, petroleum products (gasoline, diesel), lubricating oil, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage (milk, syrup), cosmetics, and acid-base solutions.
  • Gases: Natural gas, hydrogen, nitrogen, compressed air, and other high-pressure, high-purity gases.
  • Slurries: Ore pulp, coal slurry, sludge, and other media containing solid particles (solid content up to 50% in some models).
  • Key Application Fields: Petroleum and petrochemical, fine chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, metallurgy, energy, and environmental protection. It is especially indispensable in scenarios such as custody transfer metering, batch batching, and process control.
