Does an Electromagnetic Flow Meter Have Installation Orientation Requirements?

Can It Be Installed Vertically or Horizontally?

Electromagnetic flow meters can be installed either horizontally or vertically, as long as the measuring pipe is completely filled with liquid during operation. Proper installation orientation is essential to ensure accurate and stable measurement.

Horizontal Installation

Horizontal installation is commonly used in pipeline systems. When installing the flow meter horizontally, the following points should be noted:

  • The electrodes should be positioned horizontally (at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions) to avoid air bubbles or sediment accumulating on the electrodes.

  • The measuring pipe must remain fully filled with liquid at all times.

  • Avoid installing the meter at the highest point of the pipeline, where air may collect.

Vertical Installation

Vertical installation is highly recommended in applications involving wastewater, slurry, or liquids containing solid particles.

  • The flow direction should be upward, which helps prevent solids from settling inside the pipe.

  • Vertical installation ensures the pipe is naturally fully filled, improving measurement stability.

  • This orientation is ideal for sewage, sludge, and sand-containing liquids.

General Installation Requirements

  • The flow meter must be installed in a location where the pipe is always full of liquid.

  • Adequate straight pipe lengths should be provided upstream and downstream according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Proper grounding and earthing are required for reliable operation.

Installations to Avoid

  • Installation in partially filled pipes or open channels.

  • Installation at the highest point of a pipeline without back pressure.

  • Downward vertical installation where the pipe may not remain full.
