Installation guide for clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter sensors

1. Pre-Installation Preparations

  • Select Suitable Installation Location
  • Choose a straight pipe section with ≥10x pipe diameter of straight length upstream and ≥5x pipe diameter downstream. Avoid locations near pumps, valves, elbows, or tees.
  • Ensure the pipe is fully filled with fluid and avoid installation at high points or where gas may accumulate.
2. Confirm Pipe & Fluid Conditions

  • Pipe inner wall should be smooth (free of scaling, corrosion) and material uniform.
  • Verify fluid type, temperature, pressure, and other parameters to select appropriate sensors and mounting method.
  • Prepare Tools & Materials

Tools: Wrenches, screwdrivers, calipers, sandpaper, cleaning cloth.

  • Materials: Couplant (e.g., petroleum jelly, silicone grease), mounting brackets/clamps.

3. Installation Steps

  • Measure Pipe Parameters

Use calipers to accurately measure pipe outer diameter and wall thickness for meter parameter setup.

  • Clean Pipe Surface

Remove oil, rust, paint, or debris from the installation area using sandpaper and a cleaning cloth to ensure tight sensor-pipe contact.

  • Determine Mounting Method

    V-Method

  • For small to medium pipes (typically ≤200mm).
  • Z-Method: For large pipes (typically >200mm) or low-turbidity fluids.
  • W-Method: For very small pipes (typically <50mm).
4. Mark Installation Points

  • Use a ruler and marker to precisely mark sensor positions on the pipe according to the selected method. Ensure sensors are aligned on the same horizontal line and perpendicular to the pipe axis.

5. Apply Couplant

  • Apply a thin, even layer of couplant to both the pipe surface and sensor contact area to eliminate air gaps and ensure optimal ultrasonic signal transmission.
6. Install Sensors
  • Place sensors exactly on the marked positions and secure them using provided clamps or brackets. Ensure firm contact without gaps or movement.
  • For Z-Method installation, strictly adjust sensor spacing as specified in the meter manual.
7. Connect Sensor Cables

  • Connect sensor cables to the flowmeter transmitter, ensuring secure connections and avoiding loose contacts.

Post-Installation Checks

  • Verify Sensor Position
  • Confirm correct placement, spacing, and alignment according to the selected mounting method.
  • Check Cable Connections
  • Inspect for secure, undamaged connections and no signs of short circuits.
  • Perform Initial Debugging
  • Power on the flowmeter and check real-time parameters such as signal strength and quality metrics. Adjust sensor position or couplant if readings are abnormal.

Key Notes

  • Ensure sensors are mounted horizontally to prevent signal interference from gas bubbles.
  • For high-temperature applications (>80°C), use high-temperature couplant and follow manufacturer guidelines.
  • If signal quality remains poor after installation, re-clean the pipe surface and reapply couplant.
