Is it possible that the pipeline is not an absolutely circular pipe? What are the reasons?

In reality, industrial pipelines are not absolutely circular, and this situation is quite common. The main reasons are as follows: Industrial seamless steel pipes are manufactured through cold rolling or hot stretching. The pipe diameter generally ranges up to ≤DN2000, and an ovality error is allowed. Moreover, the ovality of steel pipes is closely related to whether they are produced by large formal steel enterprises or small steel enterprises, with varying qualities. The ovality of branded steel pipes is very small, while that of unbranded steel pipes is relatively poor. For some DN300 steel pipes, the maximum diameter error can reach 5mm. In addition to seamless steel pipes, a considerable number of pipelines used for low-pressure fluid transportation are spiral seam welded pipes. Their ovality index is much worse than that of mechanically manufactured seamless steel pipes. We should be aware of these situations when using these pipes for measurement purposes. The ovality of steel pipes has no impact on the transportation of fluids in the process of industrial production. However, when it comes to flow measurement applications, such as for external clamping and insertion ultrasonic flowmeters or other insertion-type flow instruments, if the ovality difference is significant, it will have a certain impact. When installing on-site, attention should be paid to selecting a section of the pipeline with better conditions.
