Ultrasonic Flow Meters

20+ Years Manufacturing Experience

What Are the Advantages of an Electromagnetic Flow Meter Compared with Ultrasonic or Vortex Flow Meters?

Compared with ultrasonic flow meters and vortex flow meters, electromagnetic flow meters offer several significant advantages, especially in applications involving conductive liquids, dirty media, or harsh operating conditions.

Compared with Ultrasonic Flow Meters

Electromagnetic flow meters have the following advantages:

  • Not affected by bubbles or suspended solids
Ultrasonic flow meters may be influenced by air bubbles, suspended solids, or poor acoustic coupling, while electromagnetic flow meters maintain stable performance as long as the liquid is conductive.

  • Higher long-term stability
Electromagnetic flow meters provide stable accuracy over time and are less sensitive to changes in fluid properties such as density, viscosity, or temperature.

  • Better performance in wastewater and slurry applications
Electromagnetic flow meters are widely used in sewage, sludge, and industrial wastewater applications where ultrasonic meters may experience signal attenuation or instability.

  • No need for coupling agents or external sensors
Unlike clamp-on ultrasonic meters, electromagnetic flow meters are installed inline and do not rely on external signal transmission through the pipe wall.

Compared with Vortex Flow Meters

Electromagnetic flow meters offer clear advantages over vortex flow meters when measuring liquids:

  • No requirement for high flow velocity
Vortex flow meters require a minimum flow velocity to generate stable vortices, whereas electromagnetic flow meters can accurately measure low flow rates.

  • No pressure loss
Electromagnetic flow meters have a full-bore design with no flow obstruction, resulting in zero additional pressure loss, unlike vortex meters which introduce a bluff body into the flow.

  • Not sensitive to vibration or flow disturbances
Vortex flow meters are sensitive to pipeline vibration and upstream disturbances, while electromagnetic flow meters are more tolerant of installation conditions.

  • Better suitability for dirty or corrosive liquids
Vortex flow meters are generally not recommended for liquids containing solids or corrosive media, whereas electromagnetic flow meters can handle such applications with proper liner and electrode selection.

Summary of Key Advantages

  • High accuracy and excellent long-term stability

  • Ideal for sewage, wastewater, slurry, and corrosive liquids

  • No moving parts and minimal maintenance

  • Zero pressure loss

  • Less sensitive to changes in fluid properties
