Can Coriolis Flow Meters Measure Gas and Liquid?

Yes, Coriolis flow meters can measure both gas and liquid, and this is one of their greatest advantages compared to many other flow measurement technologies. Because they directly measure mass flow rather than volumetric flow, they are suitable for a wide range of fluids, including liquids, gases, and even certain slurries.

Measuring Liquids

Coriolis flow meters are widely used for liquid measurement in industries such as chemical processing, food and beverage, oil and gas, and pharmaceuticals. They can accurately measure clean liquids, viscous fluids, corrosive chemicals, and multi-component mixtures. Since the measurement is based on mass, changes in temperature, pressure, or viscosity have minimal impact on accuracy. In addition to mass flow, the meter can also measure density and temperature simultaneously, allowing for concentration monitoring and process control.

However, when measuring liquids, it is important to ensure that the pipe remains completely full. The presence of entrained air or gas bubbles may cause unstable readings or reduced accuracy.

Measuring Gases

Coriolis flow meters can also measure gases, including natural gas, compressed air, and industrial gases. In gas applications, they offer significant benefits because they provide direct mass flow measurement without the need for pressure and temperature compensation, which is typically required with volumetric flow meters.

That said, gas measurement requires proper sizing. Gases have much lower density than liquids, so the meter must be carefully selected to ensure sufficient signal strength and acceptable pressure drop. In some cases, pressure drop considerations may limit the application.

Important Considerations

While Coriolis meters are highly versatile, mixed-phase flow (such as large amounts of gas in liquid) can affect stability and accuracy. Applications with severe two-phase flow conditions should be evaluated carefully.

Overall, Coriolis flow meters are an excellent choice for both gas and liquid measurement when high accuracy, direct mass flow measurement, and multi-parameter output (mass flow, density, temperature) are required.
