Liquid level meters are essential measuring instruments used to detect, display and control the liquid height inside tanks, pools and pipelines. Different working principles and structures create multiple categories of level gauges, each suitable for unique mediums, temperature, pressure and industrial environments. The main mainstream types include buoy level meters, radar level transmitters, ultrasonic level sensors, magnetic flap level gauges, pressure-type level transmitters and capacitance level meters.
Magnetic flap level gauges are one of the most widely used on-site display devices. They work based on buoyancy and magnetic coupling. A magnetic float inside the measuring tube rises and falls with liquid level, driving two-color magnetic turning sheets on the external indicator to flip and show real-time liquid height. They require no power supply, feature intuitive local readings, and can be equipped with remote signal output switches. These gauges fit non-viscous clean liquids such as water, oil and light chemical solutions, and are commonly installed in storage tanks and water treatment pools.
Float ball level meters adopt mechanical buoyancy structures. The floating ball follows liquid surface changes and drives connecting rods or internal resistors to convert liquid height into electrical signals. Simple and low-cost, they are ideal for low-demand civilian and general industrial tanks. However, mechanical structures are prone to jamming when dealing with viscous liquids or fluids containing sediment.
Ultrasonic level meters rely on sound wave reflection. The probe emits ultrasonic pulses toward the liquid surface; the system calculates distance by recording the time taken for echoes to return. Non-contact measurement avoids direct contact with liquids, eliminating corrosion and clogging risks. They suit clean water, sewage and non-volatile chemical liquids. Yet dense steam, foam or heavy dust will weaken ultrasonic signals and reduce measuring accuracy.
Radar level transmitters send high-frequency microwave signals to reflect off liquid surfaces. Microwaves penetrate vapor, foam and dust without interference, delivering stable high-precision measurement under high temperature, high pressure and volatile medium conditions. They are widely applied in chemical reaction kettles, oil storage tanks and high-temperature industrial silos, regarded as the top choice for complex harsh working conditions.
Pressure type level transmitters measure liquid level through hydrostatic pressure. A sensor installed at the tank bottom converts liquid pressure into 4-20mA electrical signals. Low cost and easy installation make them perfect for open water pools, underground sewage tanks and irrigation projects. They cannot be used for sealed tanks with variable top pressure.
Capacitance level meters detect liquid height via capacitance changes between electrodes. They adapt to viscous media, slurries and corrosive chemicals, and support both continuous level measurement and point level alarm. Their performance is easily affected by liquid dielectric constant fluctuations.
Each type of level meter has its own strengths and constraints. Enterprises need to select matching equipment according to medium viscosity, corrosiveness, tank sealing conditions, temperature and accuracy requirements to achieve stable and reliable liquid level monitoring.
