Coriolis Mass Flowmeters: Direct, Precise Mass Measurement for Process Industries

For industrial processes where mass, rather than volume, is the critical measurement value, Coriolis mass flowmeters stand out as one of the most advanced and reliable metering instruments available. Unlike volumetric flow meters that calculate flow based on fluid velocity and require correction for changes in temperature, pressure and density, Coriolis meters measure mass flow directly. This unique capability makes them irreplaceable for high-precision batching, custody transfer, recipe formulation and fiscal metering across a wide range of industrial sectors.

The operation of a Coriolis mass flowmeter relies on the Coriolis effect. Inside the sensor, one or a pair of flow tubes are vibrated at their resonant frequency by drive coils. When fluid flows through the oscillating tubes, mass inertia creates a twisting force, known as the Coriolis force. This force generates a measurable phase shift between the vibration at the inlet side and outlet side of the tubes. Sensors detect this phase difference. The magnitude of the phase shift is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid. Meanwhile, the meter can also calculate fluid density by tracking changes in the resonant frequency of the flow tubes. As a result, a single instrument delivers simultaneous readings of mass flow, density and temperature without additional external sensors.

Lanry Coriolis mass flowmeters adopt robust tube designs to suit diverse process conditions. Straight-tube and bent-tube configurations are both available. Bent-tube models offer higher signal sensitivity and are suitable for low flow measurement, while straight-tube designs feature low pressure loss and are less prone to trapping gas or solid particles, making them ideal for viscous liquids and media with minor suspended solids. Wetted parts can be configured with stainless steel 316L and other special alloys to handle oils, solvents, chemical additives, food-grade liquids and many non-conductive fluids. This is a major advantage over electromagnetic flowmeters, which only work for conductive liquids. Coriolis meters can accurately measure hydrocarbons, fuels, syrups and many other non-conductive media.

These mass flowmeters serve demanding applications throughout the process industry. In chemical plants, they are used for accurate dosing and blending of raw materials to ensure product consistency. In the food and beverage industry, they monitor edible oils, syrups and dairy products for recipe control and batch production. Energy sectors deploy them for custody transfer of fuels and lubricants, where precise mass measurement directly impacts commercial settlement. They are also widely used in pharmaceutical production, fine chemicals and lubricant dispensing, where measurement errors would lead to substantial economic loss or non-compliant finished goods.

The transmitter supports multiple signal outputs, including 4-20 mA, pulse, Modbus-RTU and HART protocols. It can easily integrate with PLC, SCADA and distributed control systems for centralised process monitoring and data logging. Built with strong anti-interference capability, the meters maintain stable performance even with fluctuations in process pressure and temperature. Our Coriolis mass flowmeters are certified to CE and ISO 9001:2015 standards, meeting the qualification requirements for international tender projects. Custom flange standards such as EN 1092 PN16 can be supplied to match project specifications for Middle East, European and African markets.

For modern process operators, accuracy and repeatability are the core of profitable and compliant production. Since no density compensation is needed, Coriolis mass flowmeters eliminate many error sources that trouble volumetric meters. They require minimal maintenance, with no moving parts to wear out. As process industries pursue stricter quality control and fiscal measurement standards, direct mass flow measurement becomes increasingly essential. Lanry Coriolis mass flowmeters provide trustworthy data for critical process control, helping customers optimise raw material consumption, reduce waste and secure reliable, traceable measurement for their most valuable fluids.
