Electromagnetic Flow Meter: Horizontal vs Vertical Installation

Which is better & Installation Rules
1. Conclusion
Vertical installation is preferred; horizontal installation is acceptable but must follow strict installation rules.

2. Vertical Installation (Recommended)
Advantages
Avoid air bubble accumulation, sediment deposition and sludge settling.
Always keep full pipe flow for more stable and accurate measurement.
Prevent electrodes from being covered by sediment; stable zero point and less drift long-term.
Less affected by pipeline layout; easier to satisfy straight pipe section requirements.
Installation Requirements
Fluid must flow from bottom to top to ensure full pipe.
Keep away from pump outlets and direct valve impact positions.
Straight pipe requirement: ≥5DN upstream, ≥3DN downstream.
Suitable Applications
Sewage, slurry, liquid with solid particles, easy sedimentation and bubble-prone media.

3. Horizontal Installation (Allowed but with Rules)
Disadvantages
Easy to gather air bubbles at the top and deposit sediment at the bottom.
Risk of half-pipe flow, causing measurement error.
Prone to electrode coverage by sludge, leading to zero drift.
Key Installation Rules
Mount the flow meter at the side of horizontal pipeline (electrodes horizontal), not top nor bottom.
Install at the lower part of the pipe route, avoid the highest point of the pipeline (prevent air accumulation).
Never install at low pipe troughs (avoid sediment deposition).
Keep same straight pipe length: 5DN upstream, 3DN downstream.
Suitable Applications
Clean water, low impurity liquid, no obvious sediment and few air bubbles.

4. General Installation Notes
Always ensure full pipe flow under all working conditions.
Do not install at pipeline highest point, elbow directly, pump outlet or throttle valve immediate rear.
Keep away from strong vibration and strong electromagnetic interference sources.
Maintain good grounding for stable signal.
