How Do You Choose an Electromagnetic Flow Meter for Low Flow Rates?

Measuring low flow rates can be challenging, especially when the flow varies significantly during operation. Choosing the right electromagnetic flow meter requires more than matching the meter size to the existing pipeline.
For low flow applications, pipe diameter, minimum flow velocity, measurement range, and required accuracy should all be considered.

1 Can an Electromagnetic Flow Meter Measure Low Flow Rates?

Yes. An electromagnetic flow meter can measure low flow rates when the liquid is sufficiently conductive and the operating velocity is within the meter’s specified measuring range.

However, a meter selected for a much larger flow rate may not provide the required performance when the actual flow is consistently low.

2 Should You Choose a Smaller Flow Meter?

In some applications, selecting a smaller electromagnetic flow meter can improve the operating velocity and help keep the flow within the recommended measuring range.

For example, if a pipeline is DN100 but the actual flow is relatively low, a DN100 meter may not always be the best choice.

Before reducing the meter size, check the minimum and maximum flow rates, allowable pressure loss, connection requirements, and whether a reduced-bore installation is practical.

Important: Do not select a smaller meter based on nominal flow rate alone. Confirm the actual velocity and operating limits with the manufacturer.

3 What Causes Unstable Readings at Low Flow Rates?

Several factors can affect low flow measurement:

  • • Flow velocity below the specified measuring range
  • • Liquid conductivity below the meter’s requirement
  • • An incompletely filled pipe
  • • Air bubbles or unstable flow conditions
  • • Incorrect grounding or installation
  • • Electrode coating or deposits

Checking these conditions can help identify whether the problem is caused by meter sizing, installation, or the liquid itself.

4 What Information Is Needed for Selection?

When choosing an electromagnetic flow meter for low flow applications, provide:

  • Pipeline diameter and material
  • Minimum, normal, and maximum flow rates
  • Liquid type and conductivity
  • Required measurement accuracy
  • Operating pressure and temperature
  • Available installation space

These details help determine whether a standard electromagnetic flow meter or a smaller nominal diameter is more suitable.
