How Do You Select an Electromagnetic Flow Meter for Corrosive Liquids?

Measuring corrosive liquids requires careful selection of the wetted materials. An electromagnetic flow meter can be suitable for many conductive acids, alkalis, and chemical solutions, but the liner and electrode materials must be compatible with the actual medium.

Selecting the wrong material can lead to corrosion, liner damage, leakage, or premature meter failure.

1 Can an Electromagnetic Flow Meter Measure Acid and Alkali Solutions?

Yes, many conductive acid and alkali solutions can be measured using an appropriately configured electromagnetic flow meter.

However, suitability depends on the chemical type, concentration, temperature, conductivity, and pressure. Some chemical liquids are not compatible with standard stainless-steel electrodes or common liner materials.

2 How Do You Choose the Right Electrode Material?

Electrodes are in direct contact with the liquid, so corrosion resistance is essential. Depending on the chemical composition, possible materials include:

  • 316L stainless steel: Suitable for many general water applications and selected mild chemical services.
  • Hastelloy: Considered for certain corrosive chemical applications.
  • Titanium: May be suitable for selected chloride-containing or saline media.
  • Tantalum: Used in certain highly corrosive chemical applications.
  • Platinum: Used in selected specialized applications.

These are general examples, not universal recommendations. The exact chemical composition and operating conditions must be checked against the manufacturer’s material compatibility data.

3 Why Is Liner Selection Important?

The liner protects the measuring tube and electrically isolates the liquid from the meter body.

PTFE and other fluoropolymer liners are commonly considered for many corrosive liquids. The correct choice depends on the chemical, concentration, temperature, pressure, and any special operating conditions.

The liner and electrodes must both be compatible with the liquid. Choosing a corrosion-resistant electrode alone does not guarantee that the complete flow meter is suitable.

4 What Information Is Required for Chemical Flow Measurement?

Before selecting an electromagnetic flow meter for corrosive liquids, provide:

Exact liquid name and chemical composition
Concentration or percentage
Normal and maximum temperature
Operating pressure
Minimum, normal, and maximum flow rates
Pipe size and connection standard

If the liquid contains several chemicals, provide the mixture composition whenever possible.
