How does the flow rate affect the accuracy of ultrasonic flow meter ?

The flow rate directly impacts the measurement accuracy of clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters in the following ways:

Low flow rate / Below starting flowWhen the flow velocity is too low, the ultrasonic time difference becomes extremely small. The signal resolution drops easily, causing low accuracy, reading drift or unstable display. If the flow is far below the meter’s minimum measurable velocity, the meter may even show zero flow.

Normal flow rate (optimal range)Within the rated velocity range (typically 0.3 m/s ~ 3.0 m/s), the flow field is stable, the ultrasonic signal transmission is consistent, and the meter maintains high precision and repeatability. This is the best working range for accurate measurement.

Excessively high flow rateOver-high velocity creates severe turbulence, swirling flow and strong pipe vibration. It disturbs the ultrasonic propagation path, leads to signal attenuation and scattering, and results in measurement deviation and unstable fluctuating readings.

Flow profile distortionToo low or too high flow speed will change the flow distribution inside the pipe. Ultrasonic calculation is based on an ideal average flow profile; distorted flow will directly reduce overall accuracy.
