Installation and Maintenance Guidelines for Open Channel Flow Meters

Open channel flow meters are core measuring devices for unpressurized gravity flow, widely applied in municipal sewage plants, industrial drainage trenches, agricultural irrigation ditches and river environmental monitoring. Their measurement accuracy depends heavily on standardized installation and regular scientific maintenance. Improper installation will cause persistent flow deviation, while lack of routine upkeep leads to signal loss, equipment aging and frequent downtime. This article systematically sorts out critical notes on installation and daily maintenance for open channel flow meters.

Key Installation Requirements

1. Channel and Flume/Weir Layout

The foundation of accurate measurement lies in stable and smooth water flow. First, users must select a matched standard Parshall flume, triangular V-notch weir or rectangular weir based on the actual minimum and maximum flow. Custom-made non-standard troughs will break the fixed water level-flow mathematical relationship and bring permanent measuring errors. Second, enough straight channel sections are required: at least 5 times the channel width on the upstream side and 3 times on the downstream side. Bends, gates, water drops and sediment pools within this range will generate turbulence, backflow and eddies, distorting the real water level. The channel bottom must be flat, without protrusions or depressions that accumulate sludge.

2. Level Sensor Mounting

Most open channel meters adopt ultrasonic or radar level sensors installed above the water surface. The probe must be vertically aligned with the center of the water surface, with no floating weeds, foam, support brackets or suspended fibers blocking the sound wave transmission path. Height reservation is essential: the highest water level shall stay at least 30 cm below the probe to prevent submergence, while the lowest water level must fall within the effective measuring range of the sensor.

 

Installation sites should avoid dense water vapor, volatile corrosive fumes and strong electromagnetic interference from pumps, inverters and high-voltage cables. Metal mounting brackets need anti-rust coating, and outdoor sensors should be equipped with sun and rain shields to avoid direct exposure to harsh weather.

3. Electrical Wiring and Power Supply

Signal cables and power cables must be laid separately to reduce signal interference. RS485 communication wires should use shielded cables, with all joints fully sealed with waterproof sleeves to stop rainwater infiltration. The transmitter and junction box shall reach IP65 or higher waterproof grade. Stable DC power supply is necessary; voltage fluctuation will cause unstable data output, so a voltage stabilizer is recommended for sites with fluctuating power.

Daily Maintenance Standards

1. Regular Cleaning of Sensors

Dirt, oil, dye residues and fiber attachments on the probe surface will reflect ultrasonic signals abnormally and cause false readings. Operators need to wipe the probe with soft cloth regularly; hard scrapers are forbidden to avoid scratching the sensing surface. For textile and chemical wastewater with heavy contamination, automatic self-cleaning accessories can be equipped to lower manual cleaning frequency.

2. Flume and Channel Dredging

Sludge, sediment and garbage accumulated inside the flume will change the effective cross-section of water flow, leading to continuous measuring deviation. Users should clear silt and floating trash every month, and maintain trash racks to intercept large debris before they enter the measuring section. After heavy rain or industrial peak drainage, extra dredging inspection is required.

3. Periodic Electrical Inspection

Staff should check the transmitter shell, cable joints and junction boxes monthly to observe aging, cracks or water condensation inside. If data jumps randomly or no flow signal appears, check cable breakage, loose wiring and electromagnetic interference sources. Once a year, perform manual calibration by comparing the meter’s water level reading with a standard staff gauge to adjust zero point and range parameters.

4. Seasonal and Special Working Condition Protection

In winter, outdoor sensors need anti-freezing treatment. Ice covering the probe will completely block measurement, so radar sensors are preferred for frigid regions. For wastewater with strong acid, alkali and high TDS, regularly inspect the anti-corrosion coating of brackets and flumes to prevent structural deformation caused by corrosion.

Forbidden Operations

Do not modify the size of standard flumes or weirs arbitrarily; do not change internal flow calculation parameters of the transmitter without professional guidance. Never let the sensor be submerged by overflow water for a long time, and avoid using unshielded damaged cables for signal transmission.
