Ultrasonic Water Meters: Smart & Stable Metering for Water Supply Networks

Water utilities around the world are continuously upgrading metering systems to cut water loss, simplify data collection and realise refined water management. In this transformation, ultrasonic water meters have gradually replaced many traditional mechanical water meters and become a mainstream choice for modern municipal water supply, residential and commercial metering projects. Different from mechanical meters that depend on impeller rotation to count flow, ultrasonic water meters calculate flow velocity by capturing the time difference of ultrasonic signals travelling upstream and downstream inside the measuring pipe. This non-contact measurement principle brings remarkable advantages for long-term water metering.

The core measurement technology adopted by Lanry ultrasonic water meters is the time-of-flight method. A pair of ultrasonic transducers are installed on both sides of the measuring channel. They alternately send and receive ultrasonic pulses. When water flows forward, the sound wave travelling with the current moves faster, while the signal against the current takes more time. The meter’s electronic unit records this tiny time difference and computes the average flow speed. Combined with the known cross-sectional area of the flow tube, the volumetric flow rate is obtained. Since there are no rotating impellers, gears or other moving components inside the meter body, there is no mechanical wear. This fundamentally avoids performance drift caused by abrasion, sediment jamming or bearing aging, which are common pain points of traditional mechanical water meters.

Lanry ultrasonic water meters cover a complete range of nominal diameters, from small domestic sizes such as DN20 to large bulk meters of DN300 and above for trunk pipelines. They can meet diversified scenarios, including household water metering, apartment buildings, commercial premises, water plant outlet metering and district metering areas (DMA). The wetted channel uses smooth lining with low friction, bringing low pressure loss and saving pump operation energy for water supply networks. The integrated design combines the measuring tube, transducer assembly and computing transmitter into one compact unit for easy installation in valve pits, pump stations and underground chambers. For field deployment, battery-powered versions are widely available. A long-life battery can support continuous operation for several years without frequent replacement, which is highly suitable for remote locations without stable mains power supply.

Digital communication capability is another outstanding feature of ultrasonic water meters. They support pulse output, M-Bus, Modbus and LoRaWAN, NB-IoT options for remote data transmission. Water supply operators can read consumption data remotely, monitor abnormal flow, detect continuous small leaks and identify burst pipes at an early stage. This real-time data helps water companies calculate non-revenue water (NRW), optimise pipe network scheduling and arrange maintenance plans efficiently. The meter maintains stable accuracy even under low flow conditions, which is critical for capturing tiny household leaks that mechanical meters often fail to register.

Our ultrasonic water meters comply with CE and ISO 9001:2015 quality standards and can meet OIML R49 metrological approval requirements for global water tender projects. Multiple flange standards are optional, including EN 1092 PN16 to match specifications popular in the Middle East, Europe and Africa. The meters can work reliably within a wide range of water temperature and pressure, adapting to complex pipe network environments.

For water suppliers, reliable, low-maintenance metering is the foundation of sustainable water operation. Ultrasonic water meters eliminate mechanical degradation and deliver consistent accuracy over decades of service. They bridge physical pipe networks and digital water management platforms. As water scarcity pushes utilities to pursue smarter water distribution, ultrasonic water meters offer a future-proof metering solution. They support precise billing, leak detection and NRW reduction, helping water authorities use water resources more wisely and build more efficient digital water supply systems.
