Ultrasonic water meters rely on time-difference ultrasonic technology to measure water volume without moving internal parts. Equipped with diversified signal output interfaces, they support local reading, wired remote transmission and wireless IoT data upload, which greatly facilitates smart water supply management, industrial monitoring and agricultural irrigation. All mainstream output types can be divided into pulse output, infrared optical interface, wired bus communication and wireless IoT transmission.
Pulse Output
Pulse output is the simplest signal transmission mode. The meter converts each fixed volume of water into a pulse signal, and secondary instruments or PLCs calculate total water consumption by counting pulse numbers. It adopts passive optocoupler design with ultra-low power consumption, fully matching battery-driven ultrasonic meters. This low-cost mode is widely applied in small-scale factory monitoring and simple irrigation metering systems. However, it only transmits cumulative flow without real-time flow rate, temperature or fault alarm information, making it unsuitable for comprehensive intelligent management.
Infrared Optical Interface
The infrared optical port serves as a near-field local reading channel complying with EN13757 standards. Technicians use handheld infrared readers to collect data on site without opening the meter housing. Besides reading cumulative flow, instantaneous flow and battery voltage, the interface supports meter calibration, parameter configuration and fault diagnosis. It is mainly used for regular manual inspection and equipment maintenance in residential communities, requiring no wiring and featuring convenient one-to-one short-distance communication.
Wired Bus Output
Two mainstream wired bus solutions are RS485 and M-Bus, both supporting multi-point long-distance centralized reading. RS485 works with Modbus RTU protocol, delivering stable signals up to 1,200 meters. It can transmit complete data including bidirectional flow, medium temperature, low battery and sensor failures, compatible with industrial PLC and SCADA systems for factory water pipelines. M-Bus (Meter Bus) is a European standard dedicated to utility meters, realizing power supply and data transmission via two-core cables. It is ideal for densely arranged residential water meters, widely adopted in European and domestic smart residential projects for unified remote meter reading.
Wireless IoT Output
Wireless modules eliminate wiring construction, the most popular choice for modern smart water networks. NB-IoT leverages cellular base stations with strong signal penetration for underground wells and basements. The meter automatically uploads data to cloud platforms at preset cycles with ultra-low power loss, ensuring over 6 years of battery life. It fits scattered urban water supply pipelines and remote rural water monitoring. LoRa and LoRaWAN adopt long-range radio frequency signals, covering 3–10 kilometers under a gateway. Suitable for concentrated industrial parks and large irrigation zones, they realize regional wireless networking without relying on operator cellular networks. Wireless M-Bus is another RF solution for walk-by or drive-by meter reading, commonly used in European urban water management.
Application Selection Guide
Users choose outputs according to installation scenarios. Centralized residential buildings prefer M-Bus wired reading; scattered outdoor pipes select NB-IoT; industrial workshops adopt RS485 for automation linkage; field inspection uses infrared interfaces, and simple metering devices apply pulse output. With flexible matching of multiple output modes, ultrasonic water meters meet all demands from manual patrol reading to full automatic IoT smart water management.
