Clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters have clear application limitations as follows:
Strict requirements for liquid medium
They only work well with clean, single-phase, low-viscosity liquids.
Not suitable for high-viscosity media, oil-water mixture, liquids with excessive air bubbles, suspended solids, sediment or slurry.
Pipe material and inner wall restrictions
Measurement is affected by thick inner scaling, rust, and thick pipe lining such as rubber or PTFE.
They are not ideal for severely corroded cast iron pipes, thick fiberglass pipes and some composite pipes.
Must install with sufficient straight pipe sections
It requires stable flow profile. Insufficient straight pipe, installation near elbows, pumps, valves or reducers will cause turbulent flow and lead to large measurement deviation.
Full pipe flow is mandatory
The pipe must be completely full of liquid. Half-filled pipe will cause unstable readings or no signal.
Temperature limitation
Standard transducers only support medium temperature up to 85°C. Even high-temperature models are generally limited to 200°C. Ultra-high temperature media cannot be measured.
Influence by flow velocityToo low flow speed reduces accuracy; excessively high velocity causes strong turbulence and signal fluctuation.
Susceptible to installation and external interference
Measurement performance depends greatly on pipe surface treatment, proper coupling gel application and correct sensor spacing.
Strong on-site vibration and electromagnetic interference also affect stability.
