Why Does an Electromagnetic Flowmeter Reading Fluctuate?

One of the most common questions we receive about electromagnetic flowmeters is:

“Why does the flow reading keep fluctuating even though the process seems stable?”

A small amount of variation is normal in many applications. However, if the flow value changes continuously or jumps significantly, it is worth checking the installation and operating conditions.

The good news is that an unstable reading does not necessarily mean that the flowmeter is faulty.

In many cases, the cause can be found in the pipeline, liquid condition, grounding or electrical environment.

What Does a Fluctuating Flow Reading Mean?

An electromagnetic flowmeter measures the velocity of conductive liquid passing through its measuring tube.

If the actual liquid velocity changes, the displayed flow will naturally change as well.

The problem occurs when the process appears stable but the flowmeter continues to show significant fluctuations.

In this situation, the first step is to determine whether the fluctuation comes from the actual process or from the measurement system.

1. Is the Actual Flow Really Stable?

Before checking the flowmeter, check the process.

Pumps, control valves and other equipment can cause real flow fluctuations.

A variable-frequency drive may continuously adjust pump speed.

A control valve may repeatedly open and close.

Another branch of the pipeline may also be changing the flow.

If the actual flow is changing, the electromagnetic flowmeter is simply reporting the process condition.

Therefore, compare the flowmeter reading with another reliable measurement if possible.

2. Is the Pipe Completely Full?

A full measuring tube is important for electromagnetic flow measurement.

If the pipe is partially filled, the electrodes may not remain completely immersed in the conductive liquid.

Air may also accumulate around the electrodes.

This can result in unstable signals and fluctuating flow readings.

Check whether the flowmeter is installed:

at a pipeline high point;
near a free discharge;
where the pipe can drain;
in a section with changing liquid levels.

If possible, choose a location where the measuring tube remains completely full during normal operation.

3. Are There Air Bubbles in the Liquid?

Air bubbles are another common cause of unstable measurement.

The electromagnetic flowmeter relies on the electrical signal generated by conductive liquid moving through the magnetic field.

Large amounts of gas or air can disturb the measurement condition around the electrodes.

This is particularly common in systems involving:

pumps;
suction lines;
wastewater;
chemical processes;
liquids that can release dissolved gas.

If the reading becomes unstable when the pump starts, check for air entering the pipeline.

4. Is the Liquid Conductivity Stable?

Electromagnetic flowmeters require conductive liquid.

If the liquid conductivity is too low or changes significantly during operation, the measurement signal may become weak or unstable.

This can occur in processes where different liquids are mixed or where the concentration changes continuously.

The actual conductivity requirement depends on the specific flowmeter, so the manufacturer’s specification should be checked.

5. Is the Flowmeter Properly Grounded?

Grounding is particularly important for electromagnetic flowmeters.

The sensor measures a relatively small electrical signal generated by the flowing liquid.

If the grounding system is poor, external electrical noise can interfere with the measurement signal.

Possible sources include:

motors;
variable-frequency drives;
power cables;
pumps;
other electrical equipment.

If the flowmeter becomes unstable after nearby electrical equipment starts operating, grounding and electrical interference should be investigated.

6. Are the Electrodes Clean?

The electrodes are in direct contact with the liquid.

Over time, deposits or contamination can build up on the electrode surface.

This can affect the electrical signal and cause unstable measurement.

This is especially important in applications involving:

wastewater;
slurry;
dirty water;
liquids containing suspended solids.

If the process conditions allow it, inspect and clean the electrodes according to the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.

7. Is the Flowmeter Installed in a Suitable Location?

Even though electromagnetic flowmeters are less sensitive to piping conditions than some other flowmeter technologies, installation location still matters.

Avoid locations where the flow is highly disturbed or where the pipe cannot remain full.

Whenever possible, install the sensor in a section with:

stable flow;
full pipe conditions;
minimal air accumulation;
suitable upstream and downstream piping.
A Simple Troubleshooting Sequence

When the flow reading fluctuates, check the following in order:

1. Is the actual flow changing?

2. Is the measuring pipe completely full?

3. Is there air in the pipeline?

4. Is the liquid conductivity suitable?

5. Is the sensor properly grounded?

6. Are the electrodes clean?

7. Is there electrical interference?

This sequence can help separate process-related problems from measurement-related problems.

Engineer’s Practical Advice

When customers report an unstable electromagnetic flowmeter, changing parameters should not be the first step.

Start with the physical installation.

Look at the pipeline.

Check the liquid.

Check the grounding.

Then check the sensor and transmitter.

In many cases, a fluctuating reading is not caused by a defective flowmeter but by unstable process conditions or an unsuitable measurement environment.
