Why Electromagnetic Flowmeters Cannot Be Installed at the Highest Point or Downward Slope of the Pipeline?

Electromagnetic flowmeters (EMF) work based on Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction, which requires that the measured conductive liquid must fully fill the pipeline and flow stably through the sensor’s magnetic field. Only in this way can the electrodes accurately detect the induced electromotive force (EMF) generated by the liquid cutting the magnetic lines of force, so as to output accurate flow data. Installing the EMF at the highest point of the pipeline or the downward slope will directly violate this core working condition, leading to serious measurement errors, unstable operation and even equipment failure. The specific reasons are detailed as follows:
Installation at the Highest Point of the Pipeline
Installing an electromagnetic flowmeter at the highest point of the pipeline is one of the most common incorrect installation methods, which will cause two key problems that affect the measurement accuracy:
First, air and bubbles are easy to accumulate. In the process of liquid transportation, air is often mixed in the pipeline, and due to the principle of gas floating, these air and bubbles will continuously rise and gather at the highest point of the pipeline. When the electromagnetic flowmeter is installed here, the accumulated air will form an air pocket in the sensor measuring tube, which will directly cover the measuring electrodes of the flowmeter. Since air is a non-conductive medium, it will block the contact between the electrodes and the conductive liquid, making the electrodes unable to detect the induced electromotive force generated by the liquid cutting the magnetic field. As a result, the flowmeter will show abnormal phenomena such as unstable readings, random fluctuations, empty pipe alarms, or even no flow display (the meter shows 0 when there is actual liquid flow).
