Why Is Proper Grounding Important for an Electromagnetic Flowmeter?

When an electromagnetic flowmeter shows an unstable flow signal, customers often check the sensor, transmitter and pipeline first.

But there is another simple question that should not be overlooked:

“Is the flowmeter properly grounded?”

Grounding may not seem directly related to flow measurement.

However, electromagnetic flowmeters work by detecting a relatively small electrical signal generated by the conductive liquid.

That makes proper grounding an important part of a stable measurement system.

Why Does an Electromagnetic Flowmeter Need Grounding?

The flowmeter detects a small induced voltage between the electrodes.

This signal is useful, but it is also relatively small compared with many electrical interference signals that can exist in an industrial environment.

The displayed value may therefore fluctuate around zero.

In this situation, repeatedly adjusting the zero point may not solve the root cause.
