Ultrasonic Flow Meters

20+ Years Manufacturing Experience

For clamp on ultrasonic flowmeter, what should I do if the pipe is partially full?

A standard clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter is generally designed for full-pipe applications. If the pipe is partially full, the ultrasonic signal may not travel correctly through the liquid, which can affect measurement accuracy and stability.

If possible, consider modifying the installation or piping arrangement to keep the pipe full at the measurement point. This is usually the preferred solution when using a standard transit-time ultrasonic flow meter.

If keeping the pipe full is not possible, we can recommend a suitable Doppler flow meter or partially filled pipe flow meter based on your application.

Please provide the following information so we can recommend the most suitable solution:

Pipe diameter and material
Minimum and maximum liquid level
Fluid type
Flow range
Pipe installation photos
Whether the pipe is normally full or partially full

Our technical team can then recommend the appropriate flow meter and installation method for your application.
