Insertion ultrasonic flow meters are widely applied in municipal water supply, industrial circulating water, wastewater treatment and pipeline flow monitoring. Featuring online hot-tapping installation, no pipeline cutting, no system shutdown and low pressure loss, they are ideal for large-diameter pipe flow measurement. Standard and scientific installation is critical to ensure measurement accuracy, operational stability and long service life. This guide provides systematic installation procedures, site selection rules and post-installation debugging standards for insertion ultrasonic flow meters.
First of all, scientific installation site selection is the premise of accurate measurement. The installation position must be set on a fully filled closed pipeline, avoiding half-full pipes, vacuum sections and positions with accumulated air bubbles or sediment. For horizontal pipelines, install sensors at the side waist of the pipe (45° to 135° from the top) to prevent air accumulation at the pipe top and sludge deposition at the bottom from interfering with ultrasonic signals. Vertical pipelines with upward fluid flow are the optimal installation choice, as they ensure stable and full pipe flow conditions. In addition, sufficient straight pipe sections are required: a minimum of 10 times the pipe diameter upstream and 5 times downstream, keeping away from elbows, valves, pumps, tees and other pipe fittings that cause flow field turbulence.
Before formal installation, prepare tools and inspect equipment comprehensively. Professional hot-tapping machines, ball valves, wrenches and ultrasonic coupling agent are required. Check the sensors, host controller and cables for damage, and confirm that the pipe operating pressure and temperature are within the meter’s rated range. Clean the pipe surface installation area thoroughly to remove rust, paint and dirt, ensuring a smooth and flat mounting surface for stable sensor fixation and signal transmission.
The core installation procedure follows standardized hot-tapping and sensor embedding steps. First, weld or fix the matching ball valve on the reserved pipe installation position to realize sealed online perforation without medium leakage. Open the ball valve slowly, operate the tapping machine to drill holes strictly according to the pipe diameter specification, and remove internal pipe debris after drilling. Then insert the ultrasonic sensor probe into the pipeline, adjust the insertion depth strictly based on the pipe diameter parameter, and align the flow direction arrow on the sensor with the actual fluid flow direction to avoid reverse installation which causes measurement failure. After positioning, lock the sensor fixing nut firmly to ensure good sealing and prevent water seepage and probe displacement.
After mechanical installation, complete electrical wiring and parameter configuration. Connect the sensor cable to the flow meter host correctly, avoid wrong wiring or loose interface, and do a good job of waterproof and dustproof protection for wiring ports. Power on the device, set basic parameters including pipe material, pipe outer diameter, wall thickness and medium type through the host system. Select a suitable measurement mode (Z-mode for sewage and turbid water, V-mode for clean water) according to the fluid medium to optimize signal acquisition effect.
Post-installation inspection and debugging are essential to guarantee stable operation. Observe the host signal intensity and real-time flow data; stable signal values and smooth data fluctuation indicate normal installation. Check all sealing parts for leakage and confirm that the sensor probe has no shaking or offset. After 30 minutes of stable operation, perform data calibration to eliminate installation errors. For devices equipped with telemetry functions such as NB-IoT, LoRaWAN and GPRS, complete network debugging to ensure real-time remote data upload.
In daily installation and use, avoid installation in strong electromagnetic interference environments such as high-voltage equipment and frequency converters. Regularly check sensor tightness and signal stability. Standard installation can make the meter achieve a wide turn-down ratio (R250 to R500) and high measurement accuracy, providing reliable flow data support for smart water network monitoring, pipeline leakage detection and industrial flow metering.
