Suitable and Unsuitable Liquids for Magnetic Flow Measurement
One of the most frequently asked questions is whether a fluid can be measured by an electromagnetic flow meter.
Suitable Fluids (Conductive Liquids)
Electromagnetic flow meters can only measure liquids that conduct electricity, such as:
* Tap water
* Wastewater / sewage
* Industrial wastewater
* Acids and alkalis
* Slurries (mining, pulp, cement slurry)
* Food liquids with conductivity
Unsuitable Fluids (Non-Conductive)
The meter cannot measure non-conductive fluids, such as:
* Oil and petroleum products
* Gasoline and diesel
* Gas or steam
* Pure distilled water (very low conductivity)
* Organic solvents
Why Conductivity Matters
Since electromagnetic flow meters rely on induced voltage, the fluid must contain charged particles (ions). Without conductivity, no signal is generated.
Minimum Conductivity Requirement
Most electromagnetic flow meters require a minimum conductivity of around:
≥ 5 μS/cm (microSiemens/cm)
